The projected cost for implementing Light Rail Transit (LRT) infrastructure in Johor is estimated at RM16.7 billion, a stark contrast to the RM7 billion estimated for Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) infrastructure. Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, the Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications state executive councillor, revealed these figures after a comprehensive analysis comparing the LRT and ART systems, based on presentations by two consortia advocating for these public transport systems.
Explaining the breakdown, Mohamad Fazli stated that the LRT system necessitates a new elevated section design and approval of the railway scheme. Moreover, acquiring land for the depot in Desa Jaya and five acres for track switching/shunting adds to the infrastructure expenses for depots and LRT stations.
Responding to an inquiry during the 15th Johor Legislative Assembly (DUN) meeting, Mohamad Fazli addressed Chen Kah Eng's query regarding the progress of the LRT study for Johor Baru.
A specialized committee comprising the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Transport (MoT), Ministry of Finance (MoF), Public Private Partnership Unit (Ukas), and Johor State Economic Planning Division (BPENJ) convened in December to assess the analysis outcomes and recommendations. This committee, chaired by Mohamad Fazli, engaged twice, including hearing presentations from the consortia proposing LRT and ART systems.
Emphasizing the government's priority, Mohamad Fazli highlighted the goal of completing the transport system by December 2026. This timeline aligns with the launch of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) connecting Bukit Chagar to Woodlands, Singapore. Delay in completing the passenger dispersal service (ART/LRT) risks congestion at the Bukit Chagar RTS Station once operations commence.
To mitigate this, the state government favors the construction of Elevated ART (E-ART) in Johor Baru City, replacing the previously canceled Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This strategic move aims to synchronize transport developments with the upcoming RTS operations, ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient public transport services.
The deliberations and decisions taken by the committee underscore the meticulous planning and foresight invested in shaping Johor's future transport infrastructure, with a keen eye on integration and effectiveness in meeting public transportation needs.
