PETALING JAYA: A total of 3,223 tonnes of food waste was disposed of during the first week of fasting in Johor, says state housing and local government committee chairman Jafni Shukor.

He said this was less than the 4,559 tonnes recorded in one day last year.

“This is a result of the campaign by SWCorp since 2015 to reduce food wastage and the amount of food waste discarded at disposal sites,” Harian Metro reported him as saying at a Ramadan bazaar in Kulai yesterday.

SWCorp CEO Khaled Mohamed said 1,585.48kg of food was collected from 29 Ramadan bazaars in the state.

“Last year, this project saved 60,798.8kg of excess food from 147 bazaars nationwide, estimated to be worth RM717,021.18.
