The Johor government has engaged in discussions with several prominent South Korean corporations, potentially paving the way for strategic investments worth an estimated US$190 million (RM830 million) to flow into the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, leading a four-day working visit to Seoul beginning October 28, emphasized the importance of these engagements for Johor’s growth. During this visit, he met with senior representatives from companies like Hanwha Solutions Corporation, a Fortune Global 500 company well-regarded for its pioneering work in clean energy and chemical innovations. The goal of the discussions was to promote Johor as a competitive investment destination and attract high value investments that align with the state’s economic development goals.

In addition to Hanwha, Onn Hafiz and the Johor delegation met with key figures from SPC Group, a global food and beverage conglomerate with popular brands like Paris Baguette, and CJ CheilJedang Group, a significant producer of halal certified Korean food in Malaysia. These meetings highlight Johor’s effort to diversify its economic partnerships and tap into South Korea’s robust industry ecosystem. In a Facebook post following the meetings, Onn Hafiz noted that potential investments from these firms could contribute to job creation, specifically high income roles, while driving substantial economic growth and advancing the well-being of Johor’s citizens.

I believe these companies are aware of Johor’s potential as a strategic investment hub. Our state offers not only attractive business opportunities but also a supportive environment for sustainable, long-term growth, Onn Hafiz stated. He highlighted that Johor’s strategic location, coupled with a business-friendly ecosystem, makes it a favorable choice for multinational firms looking to establish a foothold in the ASEAN region.

Further, Onn Hafiz and his team participated in a seminar titled Unlocking Regional Growth: Business Opportunities in JS-SEZ, aimed at introducing South Korean investors to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). This event attracted representatives from 83 South Korean firms across various industries, providing a valuable platform to position Johor as a preferred destination for strategic, sustainable investments.

During the seminar, Onn Hafiz shared details of several initiatives the Johor government has been working on in collaboration with Malaysia’s federal government. These initiatives include the upcoming development of the JS-SEZ and the creation of the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre Johor (IMFC-J) to serve as a one-stop facilitation center for investors. He also mentioned the establishment of the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC), which will focus on nurturing local talent to meet the evolving needs of incoming industries.

Expressing optimism about Johor’s prospects as a gateway for businesses entering the ASEAN market, Onn Hafiz pointed to Johor’s geographic advantage and the incentives offered within the JS-SEZ. Johor provides broad growth opportunities and direct access to the global market, making it an ideal choice for companies seeking sustainable and long-term investments, he added.

This series of discussions and initiatives reflects Johor’s determination to solidify its standing as a dynamic investment hub, aiming to attract high-quality investments and bolster economic opportunities for the local population. By fostering partnerships with global leaders like those in South Korea, Johor seeks to establish a foundation for sustained economic prosperity that benefits not only the state but also the broader Malaysian economy.
