Johor Umno chairperson, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has lauded Najib Abdul Razak as one of Malaysia’s finest prime ministers, expressing sorrow over the former Pekan MP's current imprisonment. During the Pekan Umno meeting, Onn conveyed his hope that Umno’s leadership would persist in seeking "justice for Najib".
Onn stated, "I am deeply grateful to Najib for his genuine dedication to serving the people. Unlike leaders who merely put on a show, Najib’s sincerity was evident, and many regret the outcome of the 14th general election. I personally miss Najib, as he consistently demonstrated a greater love for the people than for himself."
Najib served as Pekan MP from 1986 to 2022. He is now serving a prison sentence following his conviction in the SRC International corruption case and faces additional charges, including abuse of power and money laundering linked to 1MDB funds. Initially sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, his sentence was reduced on Feb 2 by the Federal Territories Pardons Board to 6 years and a RM50 million fine. Najib is currently seeking to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Ongoing Support
Onn urged Umno leaders to continue advocating for Najib's release, acknowledging the challenges involved, such as navigating through the Pardons Board process. He expressed confidence in Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the supreme council’s efforts to aid Najib despite the complexities.
Aiming for Release Before GE16
Pekan Umno hopes Najib will receive adequate defense and be released before the 16th General Election (GE16). Pekan Umno chief Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff highlighted that the motion for Najib's release was a key topic at today's meeting. He emphasized Najib’s enduring influence as a symbol of motivation within the party.
In addition to advocating for Najib’s release, Pekan Umno aims to reclaim the Pulau Manis state seat, which was lost to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the last election. Fakhruddin attributed the loss to voters being swayed by PN’s narratives. BN’s candidate, Khairuddin Mahmud, garnered 9,133 votes, while PN’s Rafiq Khan received 13,064 votes. Despite this setback, BN managed to retain the Pekan parliamentary seat and three other state seats: Chini, Bebar, and Peramu Jaya.
