The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha on Saturday announced a National Convention of Workers and Farmers on July 29 in the national capital.
Thousands of representatives from all states and districts across the country are expected to be a part of the event, it said in a statement.
“The convention will declare the future course of joint and coordinated struggles continuing the All-India General Strike of February 12. The convention will declare the action plan for intensifying independent, issue-based and united struggles against the anti-worker, anti-farmer, anti-people policies of the NDA government and until all demands are achieved," it said.
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) alleged that the ruling regime is stubbornly determined to place the entire liability and economic turmoil resulting from the US Imperialist War on Iran onto the shoulders of the working people by imposing price rises on petroleum products which causes cascading price increases and promotes black marketing.
“The scarcity of cooking gas has affected the working class, especially the urban population leading to massive reverse migration. Scarcity of fertilisers will have a long-term impact on the country’s food security, in addition to the burden on the farmers already crumbling under distress," it said.
The trade union body also hit out at the Centre for announcing austerity measures instead of taxing the super-rich of India, who have gained exponentially even during this period.
“Within a week after the election results, the government notified rules to implement Labour Codes and notified the VB Gram G Act 2025, thereby burying the historical MGNREGA Act 2005. The Centre has signed the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement that will detrimentally affect the apple farmers in Jammu Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, the fruit and meat sectors, the MSME sector and make agriculture and industry eternally subservient to the global trade structure," CITU president Sudip Dutta said.
