JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo plans to disburse incentives of up to Rp5 trillion for electric vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, and buses. The stimulus is prepared as he acknowledged that such policies had been applied by all countries in the world, particularly Europe.

“It is done with calculations and studies, as well as studying [similar policies of] other countries,” he said in a press conference at the State Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday.

Last week, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced that the government will spend incentives of Rp80 million for electric cars and Rp8 million for electric motorbikes.

The President hoped that this incentive will boost the industry development related to battery-powered cars and motorbikes in the country. As a result, he believed that taxes and Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) will increase, and employment opportunities will be wide open.

“Because this will encourage other supporting industries,” he remarked.

Not only for electric cars and motorbikes but the President is also considering giving incentives for electric buses as public transportation as long as the fleets are produced domestically.

“The calculations will surely be different. When the calculations are complete, this decision reaches final, we will then announce it,” Jokowi concluded.
