Pickleball offers a powerful combination of cardiovascular exercise, cognitive sharping, and social connection that can significantly improve physical and mental health. Medical research highlights it as a highly efficient, lower-impact alternative to traditional racquet sports, making it uniquely effective for healthy aging and longevity. According to data published by the Harvard Medical School, playing pickleball for one hour three times a week over six weeks can lower systolic blood pressure by an average of nearly five points and reduce harmful LDT cholesterol. Players regularly spend up to 70% of their play time in moderate-to-vigorous heart rate zones. Based on my own experienced playing pickleball at Tamarind Square in Cyberjaya, I felt it has burned my calories & managed weight by the constant back-and-forth movement burns nearly four times as many calories as walking. Depending on intensity, I can expect to burn between 400 and 600 of my calories per hour.

The pickleball court (44X20 feet) is much smaller than a tennis court, the game requires less intense sprinting. The mandatory underhand serve also places significantly less stress on the shoulders and joints. As such, my cardiologist Dr. Siow Yoon Kee of the Heart Center, Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang (HSISS) has endorsed my involvement for moderate physical exercise in the pickleball game together with my children and their friends at HYPR Grounds. I enjoyed this game that could enhance balance and reflexes by the rapid pace of the ball forces that the players to execute quick side shuffles, lunges, and split-second reactions. This sharpens my body-to-brain neural pathways, enhancing the overall body-mind coordination & protecting older adults, like me from fall risks.

I found that the heavy social elements of pickleball, especially playing doubles - substantially cuts down on feeling of isolation. I realized regular interaction and team building are the key reasons why consistent racket sport players can extend their life expectancy by nearly 10 years compared to sedentary individuals. The strategic nature of predicting ball placement boosts mental alertness.
