I can still to remember my instructors during the 28-day leadership training at Outward Bound School (OBS) Lumut, said "Breathing in salty, mineral-rich sea air can act as a natural expectorant, helping to loosen mucus & clear nasal passages if you have mild congestion, allergies, or sinus issues. The sights, sounds & fresh air help lower cortisol (the stress hormone) & promote relaxation. Seawater in the ocean contains minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium and salt that evidently can soothe inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis and reduce minor muscle aches.

OBS is the pioneer of outdoor experiential education in Malaysia established in 1954 & operating under the iconic motto “To Serve, To Strive and Not To Yield”. Located right next to the cool scenic Teluk Batik beach, the school uses challenging outdoor adventures - such as kayaking, jungle trekking, rock climbing, and sailing - to build leadership, resilience, teamwork, endurance and character. Its heavily cater to school youth groups (such as state-backed leadership programs), universities & corporate team building. PETRONAS sponsored me to attend OBS customized leadership course.

Salt and water are essential for life as it supports our overall health: Izz Fayyadh performing the aerobic exercise witnessed by Dr. Zul, Ilyan & Ilfi. Pix: Jann

I found potential benefits of seawater & beach environments for my mental wellbeing and stress relief by spending time near the ocean lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety, and depression, that encourages a calm, meditative state of mind. Crashing waves also release negative ions into the air, which can help boost serotonin levels & improve sleep. So, whenever time permit I go the beach.

Over the years of my life, I realized the health benefits of salt water are something the whole family, especially my young grandchildren, can benefit from. Whether some are them are still learning how to swim and diving, salt water gives us a natural healing superpower which enriches our lives. And the best part? There is no cost to this modality. Evidently, there's a science behind how salt water, which covers more than 68% of the Earth's surface, can help each and every one of us. It's also no coincidence that the human body is composed of a similar percentage of this precious fluid.
