In 1996, whilst serving Malaysia Airlines (MAS), I attended a four-week Management Development Program on “Managerial Corporate Transformation by Human Values” led by Professor Dr. S.K. Chakraborty at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata. I learned that a balance is needed to be struck between human side of enterprise in the midst of rapid growth of business. It soon began to be realized that the drive towards ‘total quality’ - of head, heart and hand (knowledge, inspiration and work) needed to be supported by a systematic, long-term educational process for our employees in the basics of human values. This effort ought to be fairly responsive to the deep and authentic roots of the intellectual/conceptual ingredients built into an internalization process.

I can still remember the module on self-managing stress, I was taught about the basic yoga exercises that serve as a comprehensive system to holistic health, building physical fitness with mental and emotional stability. Unlike conventional sports that focus purely on athletic & endurance conditioning, yoga integrates mindful movement, deliberate breathing, and cognitive stillness exercises. Nerve-system Coherence & Awareness Interiorization: Sit at ease in a steady squatting posture (or on an erect chair), with an empty stomach and nothing tight binding around the waist, and eyes closed. Then, press one nostril with the thumb and inhale deeply, slowly, in a continuous flow through the open nostril so that the poorly used lungs are nearly full. Do not exert to bursting point. I was taught that the word Yoga derives from Sanskrit (yu), meaning to join or unite, symbolizing the connection between body and consciousness. The core significance for holistic wellbeing which encourages a balanced lifestyle combining physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana) to combat sedentary habits and stress as a useful tool for mental clarity.
