Josh Brolin has undergone many transformations for film roles – but one experience left him feeling particularly panicked.
The actor portrayed Cable, a cybernetic soldier from the future, in the 2018 superhero sequel Deadpool 2, for which he wore heavy prosthetic makeup to create the character’s distinctive facial scar, and he claimed the application was so intense that “most people can’t do it”.
“They do this thing – it’s a practical thing where they cover your head in clay and all that and then it hardens to get an impression of your head and your face,” he told The Independent.

“When they do it, it gets hot and it hardens and then slowly you start to lose your hearing. I remember I had a pad and I wrote at one point, ‘Mild panic.’ I remember hearing a voice – even though it was close, it sounded really far away, and it was like, ‘You’re gonna be fine,’ and they’re holding your hand and all that kind of stuff.”
Brolin, 58, once shared a photograph of himself sitting in the makeup chair while the mold was being applied, and could be seen holding a notepad.
The former child star, whose first film role was 1985 family adventure film The Goonies, also said that despite being in the industry for four decades, he still gets nervous the day before starting a new film.
“Every time! And you hate it every time. You're like, 'What is my problem? I've been doing this for 42 years.’”
He continued: “I remember Jack Nicholson saying that, which was surprising – every set he goes on, he gets nervous. There's something where you’re just like, oh this is gonna be the time they're like, ‘You're fake.’

Brolin suggested it might stem from wanting to prove himself to the rising stars springing up around him, stating: “Even if they haven't been around for a ton of time, you can tell they've got a talent that's special and you're like, ‘Can I still live up to...’ you know what I mean? It’s good ‘cause it makes you work instead of getting lazy and resting on your laurels.”
Brolin will next be seen in Whalefall, a high-concept survival thriller following a scuba diver (Austin Abrams) who, while searching for the remains of his father (Brolin), is swallowed alive by a sperm whale and attempts to escape. The film is out on Friday (16 October).
The actor’s other credits include No Country for Old Men, Milk, Sicario and the Dune films, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, in which he played the villainous Thanos.
