The recent Chinese New Year celebrations witnessed a surge in public complaints regarding road offenses, with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) registering a total of 3,440 grievances through platforms such as the MyJPJ e-aduan@jpj app and email aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my. These complaints, spanning from February 1 to the present, shed light on various violations plaguing the roads during the festive period.
According to Datuk Lokman Jamaan, the senior director of enforcement at JPJ, the majority of reported offenses included unauthorized usage of emergency lanes, disregarding red lights, and illegal overtaking on double lines. In response, JPJ is taking proactive measures by initiating interview notices under Section 114 of Act 333, summoning identified vehicle owners to address the violations within three working days. Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe may lead to the issuance of P (22) Notice summons, ultimately resulting in blacklisting if unresolved.
Lokman emphasized these measures during a press conference held in conjunction with the 'Op Khas Bulan Perayaan Tahun 2024 JPJ Perak,' where he underscored the department's commitment to road safety. Accompanied by Perak JPJ director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan, Lokman highlighted the significant number of summonses issued nationwide throughout the operation, totaling 27,339 summonses for various offenses.
Among the notable statistics, Lokman revealed that over 72 percent of the summonses were related to speeding violations, amounting to 19,722 cases. Additionally, 16 percent of summonses were attributed to running red lights, with 4,283 instances recorded. Other infractions included failure to wear helmets or seat belts, accounting for six percent (1,700 summonses), and overloaded vehicles, with 681 summonses.
This comprehensive crackdown underscores JPJ's commitment to enforcing road regulations and ensuring public safety during festive periods and beyond. By addressing these offenses promptly and rigorously, JPJ aims to cultivate a culture of responsible driving and reduce the prevalence of road accidents across the country.
