THE proposed establishment of a judicial tribunal was among the key matters discussed during a closed-door meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan (PH) Members of Parliament on Monday.
PKR Information Chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the proposal was presented by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in accordance with Article 125 of the Federal Constitution.
“Azalina was present to provide clarification on the matter,” said Fahmi, who also serves as Minister of Communications and MP for Lembah Pantai.
He was speaking to reporters following the over hour-long meeting held at the Seri Perdana Complex.
However, Fahmi declined to elaborate further on the details of the discussion, noting that more would be addressed in the weekly press conference scheduled for Wednesday.
“I believe what was conveyed by Anwar was well received by PH MPs,” he added.
Earlier, the Prime Minister convened a meeting with PH coalition lawmakers to align positions in what was believed to be on key national issues including subsidy reform, tax policy, and judiciary appointments
The closed-door meeting on Monday evening, was seen as part of efforts to clarify major policy directions and ensure cohesion within the coalition ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary session.
Shortly after the meeting concluded, Anwargave a thumbs-up gesture when approached by members of the media outside the Seri Perdana Complex.
“Very good, heading to Shah Alam,” he said briefly.
The meeting lasted approximately an hour and a half before vehicles carrying ministers, deputy ministers, and Pakatan Harapan MPs were seen departing the Prime Minister’s official residence.
Anwar, who chairs the PH coalition and heads the unity government, arrived at the official residence at 4.30pm, shortly after MPs and cabinet ministers began arriving from 3.45pm.
Among those present were Transport Minister and DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister and Amanah President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who also serves as PH Secretary-General.
The briefing comes on the heels of a similar engagement with Barisan Nasional MPs on 11 July and forms part of a broader effort to align lawmakers on critical national matters, particularly as the government prepares for a closely watched sitting of the Dewan Rakyat.
“This meeting is closely linked to explanations on important issues, current affairs, and preparations for the reopening of Parliament,” said PKR Women’s Chief and Nibong Tebal MP Fadhlina Sidek, speaking earlier in the day during a visit to a local school.
“God willing, all the issues raised will be addressed this evening as part of our preparations for the next parliamentary session,” she added.
Key topics reportedly discussed included the government’s proposed restructuring of fuel subsidies for RON95 petrol, speculation surrounding potential tax reforms, and the ongoing process to appoint Malaysia’s next Chief Justice.
The meeting also followed a public forum hosted a day earlier by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli on matters related to the judiciary — an issue that has generated significant public interest in recent weeks.
Anwar is expected to use the momentum from these internal consultations to ensure consistency in policy messaging and reinforce unity within the governing coalition as Parliament reconvenes. - July 14, 2025
