Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC II finally registered their first win of the season in the MFL Cup at Likas Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After a 16-match winless run, the team got the three points from the 2-1 victory over Kuala Lumpur City Extension.

AdvertisementThere was cause for optimism before the start of the match as imports Park Taesu, Telmo Castanheira, Gabriel Peres and Daniel Ting were on the starting list.

Many scoring opportunities were created but none found the target until the 45th minute when Chikonelson Kulisi smashed home the opener after receiving a perfect pass from Telmo.

Head coach Billyton Vun in his third game in charge praised the team’s spirit for the breakthrough win.

Although they only had one training session together, there was a chemistry as they were able to share responsibility and possessed mutual support and strong bond.

“It was a very positive result for us and credit must be given to all the players, in particular to the juniors,” he said.

“It is still a long journey ahead. There are some positive developments in terms of the players’ maturity. I want the players to take the opportunity provided to learn and have more self confidence and fighting spirit to further improve their game.”

Meanwhile, assistant manager I Datuk George Teo expressed his gratitude to the senior players.

“Thank you to our four senior players – Daniel Ting, Gabriel, Park and Telmo – for guiding our junior players in this match.

“Hopefully with this victory, the players can build on the momentum to improve their performance further in coming matches,” he said.

Despite the additional three points, Sabah FC II remain at the bottom of the table with six points, the same as Kuching City U23 but with an inferior goal difference.

Their next match is away to Kedah U23 on Monday (January 13).
