The director-general and a senior officer of Malaysia’s survey department will be charged next week over an alleged RM900,000 misappropriation, as MACC reports high 1MDB asset recovery.
KUALA LUMPUR: The director-general and a senior officer of the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM) will be charged in court next week.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the two are expected to be charged on Wednesday or Thursday.
They are under investigation for the alleged misappropriation of about RM900,000 in funds for personal use.
The two senior officers were initially arrested on suspicion of colluding in the scheme.
Separately, Azam said MACC has recovered more than 70% of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) assets.
He stated the recovery amounts to RM30 billion out of RM42 billion, a rate he described as among the highest globally.
“The recovery rate is among the highest globally, compared with the international average of below 30%,” he said.
The government has also successfully repatriated four artworks purchased with misappropriated 1MDB funds.
These artworks are worth nearly RM800,000 and were brought back from overseas.
MACC is in the process of recovering seven more pieces from auction house Christie’s in the United States.
The four returned works include pieces by Joan Miró, Maurice Utrillo, Balthus and Pablo Picasso.
All the artworks are currently kept at a secure location under strict security control.
The National Visual Arts Development Board will carry out unsealing, verification and further valuation.
