In a deeply emotional post that’s resonated with many online, a Malaysian woman has shared her distressing experience of being the only caregiver for her ageing parents—while her two older brothers refuse to lift a finger.
Posted anonymously on XUAN’s Facebook page, the woman explained that she has been left to shoulder the heavy burden of caregiving alone, despite the fact that all three siblings grew up in the same household and were raised by the same parents. Her brothers are now married and have their own families, while she remains single and lives with their elderly parents.
Her mother is now completely immobile and requires full-time care, while her father’s health has also taken a hit, leading to regular hospital visits. Because she lives with them, every responsibility—from daily care to medical emergencies—has fallen on her.
“Every time they need to go to the hospital, I’m the one who has to take leave,” she wrote.
Hoping to find a solution, she proposed placing their mother in a nursing home and splitting the RM4,000 monthly cost equally. But the moment the idea involved money, her brothers balked. One claimed financial strain, while the other deflected by suggesting she seek government aid.
What hurt most was not just their unwillingness to help financially, but their total absence in caregiving. When she asked for even a weekend off, their excuses ranged from kids’ tuition classes to family commitments.
Matters came to a head during an argument when she burst out in frustration, “Don’t force me to throw our parents out on the street!” Rather than being shocked, one of her brothers responded with chilling indifference:
That single comment crushed her. She questioned how being unmarried automatically made her the default caregiver, why her filial duty was treated as an obligation simply because she had “fewer responsibilities.”
“Why does being single mean I have to be morally blackmailed? Why is filial piety treated like the sole duty of the unmarried sibling, instead of a shared responsibility among all of us??” she asked, her heartbreak echoing in every word.
Her story is not just one of family neglect—it’s a reflection of the often invisible emotional toll that caregiving places on those left behind.
