UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has described the Attorney General’s Chambers’ (AGC) decision not to proceed with the prosecution of UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as a moment that brings long-standing questions to a close.
In a statement issued on January 8, 2026, Akmal expressed appreciation for the outcome, viewing it as a vindication following years of legal uncertainty surrounding Zahid’s case. He said the decision affirmed that justice ultimately prevails, particularly for individuals who, in his view, had endured prolonged scrutiny and pressure.
Akmal referred to the AGC’s explanation that the available evidence was insufficient to sustain the prosecution on all charges. He interpreted this assessment as confirmation that the case could not meet the required legal threshold, reinforcing his belief that the allegations lacked a solid evidentiary foundation.
The decision marked the latest development in a high-profile legal saga involving Zahid, who had faced 47 charges linked to criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering connected to Yayasan Akalbudi funds. These proceedings had been closely followed due to Zahid’s position as UMNO president and his role in national politics.
On September 4, 2023, the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted Zahid a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA), allowing the prosecution room to revive the case should new evidence emerge. Following that ruling, the AGC undertook a comprehensive review of the investigation, including reassessing existing material and considering additional evidence.
After completing this review, the AGC concluded that the case could not be pursued further, resulting in a decision of no further action (NFA). This outcome effectively brings an end to the prosecution unless new and compelling evidence surfaces in the future.
Akmal suggested that the decision would have wider implications beyond Zahid personally. He indicated that it could influence public perceptions about the intersection of politics and legal proceedings, particularly in cases involving senior political figures. He also stressed the importance of allowing the legal process to function independently, guided by evidence rather than public or political pressure.
The UMNO Youth chief added that the episode should serve as a reminder of the need for fairness and caution in handling high-stakes cases, especially those with significant political ramifications. He maintained that patience and trust in institutional processes were crucial, even when cases become highly contentious.
With the AGC’s decision now public, attention is expected to shift toward its broader political impact, both within UMNO and in the wider national landscape, as Zahid continues his leadership amid ongoing debates over governance, accountability and reform.
