A petition calling on the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to appeal the court decision in the Bandar Utama school stabbing case has crossed 60,000 signatures, but remains some distance from its one million signature target.
The renewed push comes as the family of Yap Shing Xuen, 16, continues appealing for its voice to be heard, with about six days remaining in the 14 day appeal window following the High Court’s Sept 14 decision.
The official Malaysian Judiciary website states that either the accused or prosecution may appeal a judgment within 14 days.
Petition calls on AGC to appeal
The petition, titled “Justice For Yap Shing Xuen: Urge Attorney General to Appeal the Bandar Utama School Murder”, was created on Sept 14, the same day the Shah Alam High Court delivered its decision.
It calls on the AGC to consider filing an appeal to the Court of Appeal before the statutory appeal period expires.
The Change.org page had 59,019 verified signatures when it was last indexed two days ago, with the number having since crossed 60,000 according to the latest petition count.

The campaign is aiming for one million signatures.
With the High Court ruling delivered on Sept 14, the family and supporters are now racing against the appeal window as they continue urging Malaysians to sign and share the petition.
Mother: ‘All we can do now is speak up’
Shing Xuen’s mother, Wong Lee Ping, has since issued an emotional appeal titled “Rayuan Seorang Ibu Agar Kes Ini Dirayu”.
She said it was easy to talk about an appeal, but only after losing a daughter did the family fully understand how limited their own ability to act was.
We are not judges and we are not prosecutors. We are simply the victim’s family who have lost a daughter we loved,” she wrote.
Wong stressed that the family respects the court, Malaysia’s judicial process and the law.
However, she acknowledged that whether an appeal is filed, and how it proceeds, ultimately involves the prosecution and the relevant legal process.
Because of this, she said the family could only speak up and ask for its voice to be heard.
‘We are not asking anyone to decide the case beforehand’
Wong also stressed that the family was not asking members of the public to determine how the case should ultimately be decided.
Instead, she said they hoped that all available legal avenues, including the possibility of filing an appeal, would receive proper consideration.
She appealed to those concerned about school safety, the protection of children and teenagers, and the rights of victims’ families to help amplify their message.

Wong ended the message by saying the appeal was “for Shing Xuen, and for every child who deserves to return home safely”.
Family also directs supporters to AGC
Apart from signing the petition, Wong encouraged members of the public who wished to support the appeal to submit their views through the AGC’s SisPAA public complaints system.

She also asked those with knowledge of criminal law and the appeal process to step forward and provide appropriate guidance and assistance to the family.
The family’s public appeal has been ongoing since the High Court decision. On Sept 18, the petition had already gathered more than 47,000 signatures and had been shared more than 60,000 times.
Teen acquitted on grounds of insanity
On Sept 14, the Shah Alam High Court acquitted and discharged the 15-year-old boy charged with Shing Xuen’s murder after finding that he was of unsound mind at the time of the incident.
The teenager, who was 14 when the incident occurred on Oct 14, 2025, was ordered to be detained at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak for psychiatric treatment, for a period to be determined under the applicable legal process.

His lawyer said the court accepted the defence of insanity under Section 84 of the Penal Code. The detention order was made under Section 348 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Shing Xuen was fatally stabbed at SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) in Petaling Jaya on Oct 14 last year. The case subsequently drew nationwide attention to school safety and student protection.
For her mother, the current campaign is not about asking public opinion to replace the courts.
It is about ensuring that, while the legal window remains open, the possibility of having the case reviewed by a higher court is given due consideration.
