De Ligt is being linked with Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.
And former Juve defender Ferrara said: “We have to understand if De Ligt has the right motivation.
“He is an important figure in the defence, but if he wants to leave, then Juve will not hold him against his will."
De Ligt's deal to 2024 carries a buyout clause of €125m from this summer, rising to €140m from June 2023.
