Netflix’s latest animated musical fantasy, K‑Pop Demon Hunters, dropped on 20 June 2025, and it’s already making major waves—especially with Malaysian fans of both K‑Pop and animation.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film introduces viewers to HUNTR/X, a fictional all-girl K-pop group who balance global stardom with battling demons threatening their fans and the spirit realm.
The story follows group members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who must protect the mystical “Honmoon” barrier that separates humans from dark entities. When their rivals, a male idol group called Saja Boys, turn out to be demons in disguise, things heat up on and off the stage.
The voice cast is as star-studded as a MAMA red carpet with Korean-American actress Arden Cho voices Rumi (with singing by EJAE), May Hong plays Mira (with vocals by Audrey Nuna), and Ji-young Yoo lends her voice to Zoey, sung by Rei Ami. K-drama heartthrob Ahn Hyo-seop also makes his English voice acting debut as Jinu, the leader of Saja Boys.
There are also cameos from big names like Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun, giving the cast even more international appeal.
The soundtrack is turning heads too, especially here in Malaysia where K-pop dominates Spotify playlists. TWICE’s Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung perform the lead single “Takedown,” and the film features original songs from EJAE, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, and producers from THEBLACKLABEL—known for hits with BLACKPINK and BIGBANG.
The soundtrack debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200—an impressive feat for a movie album.
Malaysian viewers have praised the film for its vibrant visuals, catchy music, and cultural authenticity. The animation style—clearly influenced by Spider-Verse aesthetics—is a visual treat, while the storyline gives nods to idol culture, friendship, and self-discovery.
On local social media, fans are already calling for a sequel and dreaming of a crossover with real-life K-pop groups like BTS or NewJeans. TikTok is filled with edits, song covers, and fan theories from Malaysian content creators.
In a time where global media often overlooks Asian voices, K-Pop Demon Hunters is a strong example of Asian-led storytelling that resonates beyond borders. For Malaysian fans who’ve followed K-pop since the early days of Super Junior and 2NE1, this film feels like a celebration of everything we love: music, action, and meaningful representation.
Whether you're a casual listener or full-blown ARMY, this one’s worth the watch.
