GEORGE TOWN: Two men were killed on the spot after the vehicle they were in crashed into a bus stop along the Cecil Street Ghaut at 2.30am today.
The victims, aged 25 and 29, could not be resuscitated and they died at the scene.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes from their respective fire stations in Perak Road and Beach Street.
Firemen took a few hours to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage.
A fire and rescue department spokesperson confirmed the mishap, saying that firemen had initially encountered difficulties in removing the remains of the victims, as part of the car had slipped into the nearby monsoon drain.
Cecil Street Ghaut hosts one of the oldest wet and dry markets in Penang and it is usually crowded during the early morning hours.
