
PENAMPANG: The Manangon and Monusuyan competition will be held on May 27 in conjunction with the celebration of the 2024 Kaamatan Festival at Hongkod Koisaan, here.
Competition Co-Chairman Rayner F Udong said it would be carried out online and face to face and has been held since 2018 while Monusuyan only recently in 2021.
Both have become mandatory components in the Kaamatan Festival.
Manangon is a process of narration about a fictional event which brings a positive message, whereas Monusuyan is the narration of factual events among the community.

“It is a process of cultivating and strengthening the love and pride for the Kadazandusun language as well as its literature.
“The programmee is also for the younger generation to appreciate their roots in addition to enriching their mother tongue vocabulary,” Rayner said.
He said the competition is open to Level 1 (7-9 years old) and Level 2 (10-12 years old) primary school students throughout Sabah regardless of ethnicity, race and religion.
“Participation can be made by sending a video recording of storytelling (3-5 minutes in duration for Level 1) and (1-7 minutes for Level 2), to the competition committee online.
“Three days will be taken to select the 16 participants to compete in the final stage which will be broadcasted live on Facebook and TVSabah.
“The opening date was on April 8, 2023 and the closing date on May 15 (Wednesday),” Rayner said.
The closing ceremony is expected to be officiated by the 2024 Sabah State Kaamatan Festival Celebration Committee Chairman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Datuk Kitingan who will also present prizes to the winners.
“In 2023 and 2024, the Department of Education had been directly involved. Therefore, the Sabah State Education Director was appointed during the executive committee meeting as Co-Chairman.
“A Department of Education representative was also appointed as a Joint Deputy Chairman,” he said.
The champion’s prize is RM1,000, plus a trophy, bouquet and certificate while the runner up, third place and five consolation winners will receive RM800, RM500 and RM100 respectively.
Others will receive digital certificates.
Rayner said the competition is also helping KDCA achieves its goals, as enshrined in the KDCA Constitution – Article 4 (1) (b) (c) and in HSV1 Kadazandusun that is for their sacred identity to be fully accepted and respected.
