Kajang Prison Inmate Becomes First to Earn PhD Behind Bars, Receives Royal Pardon from Selangor Sultan

The Prisons Department has announced that Murad (not his real name), a PhD holder in Business Administration, has been granted a royal pardon by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

According to a post shared by The Malaysian Prisons Department, Murad is the first prisoner to achieve a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree while serving his sentence, which began in 2001.

He was 14 years old when he started serving time

In conjunction with His Royal Highness’s birthday yesterday (December 11), the Selangor ruler granted a royal pardon, and the release warrant was read out by Kajang Prison director, Preshahdin Monshee.

Murad was only 14 when he was detained under the Tahanan Limpah Sultan (TLS) at the Kajang Prison Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

The caption on the post said:

“During Murad’s release process earlier, you could clearly see the mix of emotions on his face as the release warrant was read out.”

The department is ready to assist if Murad needs help

Preshahdin told Murad to stay disciplined and to make use of his knowledge to keep improving himself, letting him know that the department is always ready to help if he needs it.

Murad expressed his thanks to the Sultan of Selangor for the royal pardon and to the Prisons Department for giving him the chance to continue his studies and earn his PhD.
