Kajang and its neighboring areas encountered sudden flash floods on Wednesday following hours of intense rainfall, causing disruptions across the town. Social media flooded with videos depicting submerged streets, including Jalan Raja Haroun, Kajang Market, Jalan Sri Jelok leading to Kajang Prison, and Taman Sri Reko.
The heavy downpour led to significant traffic congestion, particularly around Kajang Market, where vehicles were left stranded amid the rising floodwaters, reported New Straits Times.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department received notification of the incident at 6:04 pm. Subsequently, seven firefighters and two fire engines from the Kajang fire station were dispatched to the affected areas.
Mukhlis Mukhtar, the deputy director of operations, recounted a successful rescue mission involving an 86-year-old woman trapped in her flooded residence on Jalan Melur 1, Sungai Kantan. The water level had risen to ankle-deep inside her home, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Meanwhile, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan acknowledged the flash flood crisis in Kajang, urging residents to exercise caution amid the adverse weather conditions. He took to social media to alert the public about the flooding and ensuing traffic jams caused by the heavy rainfall.
"Due to heavy rain, many places in Kajang and its surrounding areas have been hit by flash floods, creating traffic jams. Everyone, be careful," warned Syahredzan Johan in his post.
The sudden onset of flash floods serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of urban areas to extreme weather events. Such incidents underscore the importance of robust disaster preparedness measures and efficient emergency response systems to mitigate the impact on affected communities.
As authorities continue to address the aftermath of the flash floods, residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed safety precautions, particularly during periods of inclement weather. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures, communities can better withstand and recover from natural disasters like flash floods.
