PENAMPANG: A landslide-hit village in Kapayan has turned to sustainable solutions with the building of six tiers of eco-gabion, using natural materials and community effort.
The structure in Kampung Nosoob Baru was completed by volunteers guided by geologist and MPP Councillor Dr Felix Tongkul and Philip Chin Jr, aimed at stabilising slopes and reducing future risks.
Kapayan assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, who joined the villagers in the gotong-royong, said the initiative showed how local knowledge and solidarity can help communities recover.
She said climate change had worsened rainfall patterns and landslides in Kota Kinabalu, and practical, affordable solutions like eco-gabion must be prepared before disasters strike.
In line with World Rivers Day tomorrow (Sunday), Kapayan will also launch Skuad Sungai (River Squad)to safeguard rivers, while this year’s Kapayan River Festiva; has been cancelled to honour lives lost in the recent tragedy.
