SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 - The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) prevented Sungai Gombak from being polluted by an oil spill after a lorry crashed on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway at Km31.8 yesterday.
In a Facebook post, LUAS said it received a report on the crash at 5.30pm and rushed to the site to inspect the area and its surroundings.
It added that it found hydraulic fluid entering the drain along the highway, which feeds into the Sungai Gombak Water Treatment Plant intake gate.
“Further checks by the LUAS team found that the concessionaire, AFA Prime Bhd, had performed preventive and early control measures by spreading sawdust on the road and building dirt and sand bunds in the drain.
“The LUAS team also placed oil booms and oil pads in several locations downstream from the crash along the highway drain leading into Sungai Gombak as a preventive measure,” it said.
LUAS added that suction and cleanup works were completed at 5am today, while the damaged vehicle was moved at 6.30am.
It said it also confirmed the absence of oil residue at the crash site and pollutants in the nearby river.
“LUAS expresses its gratitude to AFA Prime Bhd, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd for their commitment in immediately mitigating this incident and preventing worse problems for the state’s water resources,” the authority said.
