Colleagues pay tribute to late journalist Karam Singh Walia, recalling his punctuality, high standards, and lasting influence on Malaysia’s broadcasting industry
KLANG: Late Datuk Karam Singh Walia is remembered as a punctual journalist who prioritised perfection. Colleagues paid their respects at his residence following his passing at the age of 67.
Media Prima On-Air Presentation general manager Kamaruddin Mape knew Karam Singh since 1997. He highlighted the late journalist’s strong discipline and time management.
Kamaruddin said they would remind each other about punctuality at the office. This reflected Karam Singh’s unwavering commitment to professionalism.
His eloquence and mastery in delivering reports were standout qualities. Kamaruddin said these should be emulated by younger generations in the industry.
“He set a very high standard in television broadcasting to the extent that he became a reference point for many, including university students and those involved in the broadcasting industry,” he said.
Kamaruddin added that he had not seen anyone who could match Karam Singh’s abilities. He noted that some had tried but had not reached that level.
Another colleague, Mohammad Yazzer Mahmun, recalled advice about sincerity in any task. Mohammad Yazzer is Media Prima’s network representative in Sabah.
He frequently contacted Karam Singh for views and advice on public complaint issues. This was an area where the late journalist was considered an expert.
“Yesterday I managed to visit him and his family served me chapati. I wanted two, but he said three, as if to remind me that as being with TV3, we must finish three. His spirit remained with TV3, and he was a journalist I deeply respected for teaching me a great deal in broadcasting,” Mohammad Yazzer said.
He described their final meeting before Karam Singh passed away. Mohammad Yazzer said the industry has lost a towering figure in journalism.
Born in 1959 in Teluk Intan, Karam Singh began his career with TV3 in 1995. He retired in 2014 due to health issues.
He was widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential environmental journalists. His accolades included winning the Anugerah Seri Angkasa twice.
He also won the MPI Awards for Best Environmental Television Journalist for four consecutive years. This was from 2004 to 2007.
He was among media practitioners who received the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA in June 2024.
