In a major push towards cleanliness, the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched an ambitious bio-mining project to scientifically process decades-old legacy waste accumulated at the solid waste management (SWM) site in Sheikhpura Suhana on the Karnal-Meerut Road.

The long-awaited project aims to clear around 1.83 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste lying at the site. The civic body has engaged an agency for the task at an estimated cost of Rs 6.82 crore.

The agency has been given a deadline of four months and is expected to complete the processing work by the end of October in compliance with the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Officials said the project would not only help eliminate a major environmental concern but also free up valuable land for future development.

The reclaimed land is proposed to be utilised for a waste-to-energy project, which is expected to strengthen the city’s long-term waste management infrastructure.

“The processing of legacy waste will significantly improve cleanliness, reduce environmental hazards and create valuable space for future projects. The reclaimed land is planned to be used for a waste-to-energy initiative,” said Ashok Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (AMC).

The project was formally inaugurated by Mayor Renu Bala Gupta and Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand on Friday, who referred to it as a landmark initiative in the city’s journey towards sustainable urban development.

They said the project would address long-pending waste management challenges while contributing to environmental conservation and public health.

Mayor Gupta said officials have been directed to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated time frame without compromising quality or transparency.

“Bio-mining technology will enable the scientific treatment of decades-old waste, reducing environmental risks and improving cleanliness standards. This initiative is not merely about waste disposal, but it is about creating a healthier environment and a better quality of life for future generations,” she said.

She expressed confidence that the successful completion of the project would lead to a substantial reduction in pollution levels and bring lasting health benefits to residents, particularly those living near the site.

MLA Jagmohan Anand lauded the initiative and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing world-class civic amenities in Karnal under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

“This bio-mining project will play a crucial role in environmental improvement and urban transformation. There will be no shortage of funds or resources for projects aimed at improving civic infrastructure and beautifying the city,” Anand said.

Both leaders also appealed to citizens to actively support cleanliness initiatives and adopt responsible waste management practices. They urged residents to make cleanliness a habit and a social responsibility rather than viewing it merely as a civic obligation.
