Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kataeb Hezbollah says a senior commander was killed in a strike near its main base, blaming a “Zionist-US” attack.

BAGHDAD: The Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kataeb Hezbollah announced the death of a senior commander in a strike in southern Iraq.

The group’s secretary-general, Ahmad al-Hamidawi, mourned the loss of “great commander” Ali Hussein al-Freiji in a statement on Thursday.

Al-Freiji had been a member of the armed faction for more than two decades.

Two sources within the faction confirmed a strike hit a vehicle near the group’s main base on Wednesday.

The attack initially killed two fighters, with the toll later rising to three including the commander.

One source described the assault as a “Zionist-US strike”.
