MANILA, Philippines — Katseye's Filipina member Sophia Laforteza is temporarily stepping back from the global girl group’s activities to focus on her mental health and overall well-being, the group and its management announced Friday.
The announcement came through Katseye's official channels, with management saying Laforteza will be unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities after consultations with medical professionals. She has been advised to take an extended period of rest and receive ongoing care, with her condition set to be reassessed in September.
In her Instagram Story, Laforteza addressed fans, known as Eyekons, and acknowledged how difficult it was to step away from performing.
“It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot. You know how much I love being on stage, performing, and sharing these moments with you.
“Making this decision wasn't easy, but I'm learning that health has to come first," Laforteza wrote.
“I’m realizing that if I don’t take care of my mind and body now, I won’t be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long,” she continued.
The Filipina singer also thanked fans for their patience and support, promising to work toward her recovery.
“I promise I’m going to work as hard as I can to get through this, heal properly, and come back stronger.”
She ended her message by asking Eyekons to continue supporting Katseye during her absence.
“‘Til then, please continue to be kind and give Katseye all your love and support as we fulfill our promise to show up for you in every way we can. I’ll be here as one of the Eyekons in the meantime with y’all. See you soon.”
Laforteza’s announcement comes about six months after fellow member Manon Bannerman also stepped away from group activities to focus on her health and well-being.
Manon’s February hiatus became a source of controversy among fans, with some questioning the circumstances surrounding her absence and raising concerns about how she had been treated within the group.
Katseye and their label Hybe previously said they supported her decision and would continue with scheduled activities while looking forward to reuniting when the time was right.
For now, Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel and Yoonchae Jeung are the four members currently available for group activities.
The six-member group officially debuted in 2024 with “Debut” and followed it with “Touch,” which became one of their breakout songs.
The group later expanded its international profile with songs including “Gnarly” and “Gabriela,” the latter earning a Grammy nomination.
