Renowned Hong Kong actress, Katy Kung, has recently shared a deeply personal aspect of her life, revealing that she hasn't been in contact with her mother for over two decades. In a candid interview, the 33-year-old TVB star shed light on her upbringing and the remarkable journey that led her to fame and independence.

Kung's story is marked by the absence of a traditional family structure. Her parents separated when she was young, leaving her in the care of her paternal grandparents. Speaking about her family dynamics, she said, "Everyone knows I was raised by my paternal grandfather and grandmother. It's been around 20 years since I last had a conversation with my mother."

Despite the long estrangement from her parents, Kung has chosen not to interfere in their lives, opting to respect their privacy. She acknowledges that she has only vague information about their current circumstances, primarily obtained from media reports.

In a twist of events earlier this year, the Hong Kong media reported that Kung's mother had remarried and had a son. These reports also suggested that she was benefiting from Hong Kong's social welfare programs despite owning property, a car, and a house in China. Kung, however, has refrained from commenting on these claims, maintaining her focus on her own life and career.

Kung's journey to independence and success was shaped by her unique childhood experiences. Raised by her paternal grandparents, she learned the value of self-reliance from a young age. At just 14 years old, she embarked on a modelling career, further fostering her independence.

Despite her parents' divorce and her own challenging upbringing, Kung remains a firm believer in love. Her early experiences and the hardships she endured did not diminish her desire to find a reliable partner. However, she has changed her perspective over the years, no longer considering marriage or starting a family as her top priority in life.

Kung's entry into the entertainment industry occurred when she signed with TVB in 2008, marking the beginning of her remarkable acting career. She quickly rose to prominence with roles in popular shows like "Dressage To Win" (2008), "Be Home for Dinner" (2011), and "The Executioner" (2015-2016).

Her breakthrough came with her role in the television series "Two Steps From Heaven" (2016), for which she received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2016 TVB Anniversary Awards. Kung continued to impress audiences and was honoured with the Favourite TVB Actress prize at the 2020 TVB Anniversary Awards for her performance in the action series "Death By Zero" (2020).

Beyond her successful acting career, Kung has also ventured into entrepreneurship. She opened a bakery in February and launched a dessert shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, in August. Her foray into business showcases her versatility and ambition beyond the realm of entertainment.

Katy Kung's life journey, characterized by an estranged family, a pursuit of self-reliance, and a thriving acting career, serves as an inspiring example of resilience and determination. Her story reminds us that challenges can be stepping stones to success, and that one can find happiness and fulfillment on their own terms, even in the absence of conventional family structures.
