In a recent revelation by the Kedah Tourist Guide Association, it's become apparent that the dwindling number of Thai visitors to Malaysia, particularly Kedah, stems not from a language barrier, as previously assumed, but rather from a lack of effective branding in the tourism sector.

President Mohd Firdaus Abu Bakar pointed out that while blaming language barriers may seem like a convenient excuse, the real issue lies in the absence of a compelling tourism campaign.

Reflecting on past successes like 'Malaysia Truly Asia,' Firdaus highlighted the importance of showcasing Malaysia's uniqueness and diversity. However, in the absence of a coherent branding strategy, Malaysia's appeal seems to have waned among Thai tourists. This calls for a serious reevaluation of Malaysia's approach to tourism promotion.

The call for action extends beyond mere rhetoric. Firdaus urged both federal and state governments to spearhead a more robust tourism campaign, emphasizing collaboration as key to success. Specifically, he proposed a concerted effort to promote Kedah, potentially through joint initiatives between state and federal authorities.

The statistics provided by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor paint a stark picture: while millions of Malaysians flock to Thailand annually, the reverse flow of Thai visitors to Malaysia remains comparatively meagre.

Firdaus outlined several factors contributing to this trend, including cultural and climatic similarities, lack of international events catering to Thai interests, and cumbersome immigration procedures at border crossings.

Furthermore, the concentration of tourist destinations in the Klang Valley poses a logistical challenge for Thai travellers, deterring them from exploring other regions such as Kedah. Firdaus also underscored the importance of maintaining tourist spots and enhancing the quality of tourism products to attract Thai visitors effectively.

Addressing the decline in Thai tourist arrivals requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond language barriers. It necessitates a comprehensive rebranding effort that celebrates Malaysia's diversity while catering to the specific interests and needs of Thai travellers.

By prioritizing collaboration between government agencies and investing in infrastructure and marketing, Malaysia can reclaim its status as a premier tourist destination for Thai visitors.
