Rapid Rail restores Kelana Jaya LRT service after power disruption caused by train collector fault

PETALING JAYA: Rapid Rail has confirmed that Kelana Jaya LRT Line services were fully restored at 8.36pm last night following a power disruption that affected operations for approximately 80 minutes.

The disruption occurred between Abdullah Hukum and Universiti stations after a suspected malfunction in the train current collector device on Train No. 06, which caused the train to lose power and come to a standstill.

The incident began at approximately 7.10pm when passengers reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound followed by smoke as a train departed Kerinchi station.

Witnesses described the train losing power gradually, with lights flickering and carriages jerking before coming to a complete halt.

According to reports from passengers on the affected train, the person-in-charge inspected the rear of the train before informing commuters that the train had lost power.

For safety reasons, ventilation windows were opened while passengers waited for assistance.

Rapid Rail officially logged the incident at 7.17pm, attributing the power failure to a suspected fault in the train current collector device on Train No. 06, which resulted in a power supply interruption in the affected area.

To minimise inconvenience to commuters, Rapid Rail immediately activated alternative train services to maintain connectivity along the affected stretch.

The arrangements included modified turnaround points and shuttle services.

Approximately 30 minutes after the initial breakdown, another train arrived to facilitate passenger transfers.

Passengers were eventually instructed to disembark at Kerinchi station as operations continued on a single track configuration.

Due to the service disruption, passengers experienced longer waiting times at platforms, particularly between Bangsar and Universiti stations during the affected period.

Rapid Rail’s engineering team was immediately dispatched to the incident location to assess and rectify the fault.

Repair works were successfully completed by 8.30pm, with full service restoration confirmed at 8.36pm – approximately 80 minutes after the initial incident.

To ensure passenger safety and smooth movement throughout the disruption, auxiliary police officers and station staff were deployed at platforms and concourse areas to assist commuters.

Regular announcements regarding train schedules were also made at affected stations.

Rapid Rail has indicated that a detailed inspection will be conducted after operating hours to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

In their official statement, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers and expressed appreciation for their patience and cooperation during the service disruption.

The company advised passengers to refer to Rapid KL’s social media channels for real-time service updates during such incidents.

The incident was documented by theSun reporter Gregory Shane, who was present at the scene and captured the passenger experience during the disruption.
