Kelantan police anticipate nearly a million vehicles entering the state for Chinese New Year, prompting a major traffic safety operation from February 15 to 20.

KOTA BHARU: Police are preparing for a massive influx of nearly one million vehicles into Kelantan for the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the surge is due to Kelantan folk returning home to celebrate with their families.

“We will implement Op Selamat 25/26 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration from Feb 15-20,” he told reporters after the Kelantan Police Headquarters monthly assembly.

He added that constant monitoring would be ensured at known hotspots, especially in Gua Musang and Kuala Krai, as well as at construction areas that can cause traffic congestion.

In a separate development, Mohd Yusoff said 62 illegal bases had been demolished so far.

He stated the remaining bases in Tumpat are set to be torn down within one week.

For the record, 223 illegal bases have been identified across the state.

Of these, 216 are located on government land and seven are on private land.
