Kelantan Chief Minister Mohd Nassuruddin Daud has voiced his support for the adjustment of water tariff rates, assuring the public that the upcoming average increase of 22 cents per cubic meter, scheduled to take effect on February 1, will not pose a significant burden. He emphasized that the adjustment has been carefully considered for its appropriateness.
Addressing concerns about the potential impact on citizens, Nassuruddin stated during a press conference in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, that a thorough study indicates the adjustment is designed not to overburden the people, and any resulting increase in water bills is deemed insignificant.
The adjustment in water tariff rates falls under the Tariff Setting Mechanism, applicable to domestic category users across West Malaysia and Labuan. Charles Santiago, the Chairman of the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), explained that the rate adjustment is part of a comprehensive strategy. It includes the replacement of aging pipes, reduction of non-performing water (NRW), and upgrades to water treatment plants.
Nassuruddin further highlighted that the tariff rate adjustment is essential for funding crucial upgrades and maintenance work, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of water services. The funds generated from the adjustment will support initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and addressing existing challenges in the water supply system.
In addition, he mentioned that the current situation in Kelantan reflects a notable reduction in water-related issues, including fewer complaints and grievances from the public. This suggests positive progress in managing the water problem in the state.
The Chief Minister's endorsement of the tariff adjustment aligns with SPAN's emphasis on strategic improvements to the water supply system. By addressing key areas such as pipe replacement, NRW reduction, and treatment plant upgrades, the authorities aim to enhance the overall efficiency and reliability of water services.
As the adjustment is set to come into effect in the coming days, the reassurance from Kelantan's leadership aims to alleviate concerns among the public, emphasizing the necessity of the tariff adjustment for ongoing water infrastructure development and maintenance initiatives.
