The Kelantan state government has an idea in mind – constructing a wall along approximately 100 kilometers of the state’s border with Thailand, which they plan to propose to the Federal government.
The reason? Kelantan’s Deputy Menteri Besar, Datuk Dr. Mohamed Fadzli Hassan, said that this project is crucial in combating smuggling crimes and addressing flooding issues.
“Although the authorities are conducting strict border controls, the presence of numerous illegal bases complicates enforcement efforts,” Fadzli told the media friends after the Kelantan International Congress of Rafflesia 2024 yesterday (November 5).
However, there is something else that elevates the difficulty in fighting the smuggling activities – the individual land ownership in areas near the border.
Previously, Kelantan’s Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, also proposed the construction of a Malaysia-Thailand border wall to address cross-border crime.
Fadzli added that it is also difficult for the security forces to guard the entire border because the Malaysia-Thailand border is very vast.
Just recently, PDRM in Kelantan reported that many youths in the state are illegally crossing the border to Thailand for illegal entertainment activities, which include drugs.
