Viral video shows motorcyclists misusing airport zones in Kelantan, raising safety concerns and calls for tighter security at LTSIP
A viral video depicting groups of motorcyclists misusing the terminal facilities at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) has sparked a wave of public outrage and calls for stricter security measures.
The controversy began after a post on the social media platform Threads by Mohamed Sharqawi shared footage of so-called ‘mat rempit’ (motorcycle hooligans) gathering at the newly renovated airport. The group was seen loitering with their machines at the terminal’s designated pick-up and drop-off zones.
“This kind of behaviour really tarnishes the culture at LTSIP. It is embarrassing for tourists from outside Kelantan to witness this,” Sharqawi wrote.
The video clip further shows the group blocking thoroughfares to pose for photographs with their motorcycles directly in front of the terminal entrance, a move that has raised significant safety concerns.
Netizens were quick to condemn the act, with user @amr.khzri commenting: “What kind of behaviour is this, hanging out at the airport like that? It just embarrasses Kelantan. Is there nowhere else to take photos?”
In response to the incident, some members of the public have taken formal action. One user shared a screenshot of an email sent to Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), urging the immediate installation of an automated barrier gate system at the drop-off area.
The correspondence stated: “As an airport serves as a primary gateway for tourists and visitors, it is expected to reflect a safe, organised and professional environment. However, the lack of controlled access at LTSIP has allowed the misuse of these areas for inappropriate and unsafe activities, including reckless riding and unauthorised gatherings.”
Beyond the traffic obstruction, locals also raised the issue of littering, with reports of cigarette butts scattered across the renovated pavement.
“As a Kelantanese, I am truly ashamed of their behaviour,” said Azizi Jaafar. “If you must smoke, at least keep the area clean and do not litter. They get angry when people comment, yet they refuse to change their attitude. This is unacceptable.”
