KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan National Security Council (MKN) is actively intensifying its efforts to disseminate information on preparations for the Northeast monsoon in the state to prevent untoward disasters from recurring.

Its assistant director Hishamuddin Ab Rashid said more than 20 awareness programmes had been conducted in all districts in Kelantan since the beginning of October.

“As we know, Kelantan is hit by floods every year. MKN, as the coordinating agency, takes on this responsibility in the hope that such cases will not recur.

“We want residents, especially those in areas that are repeatedly affected by floods, to be aware of weather changes and act early when flooding occurs instead of waiting for the authorities to help,“ he told reporters after inaugurating the district-level community safety programme here today.

Also present was Kelantan Information Department (JaPen) director Muhd Nor Aswadi Md Nor.

Hishamuddin said MKN has established a joint network with various government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local leaders to ensure wide dissemination of information to all sections of society.

He also emphasised that the flood season in Kelantan should not be treated like a water festival as improper monitoring can lead to tragedies.

Hishamuddin urged parents to be vigilant, especially in monitoring their children during floods as negligence can lead to life-threatening situations.

Meanwhile, Muhd Nor Aswadi said that JaPen has been promoting flood preparedness through its ‘Info on Wheels’ programme to provide accurate information and increase public safety. - Bernama
