Former England defender Martin Keown says Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon should resist any offer to commit to Scotland.
Keown is convinced Gordon can succeed as an England player.
He told talkSPORT: "For me, he's only been around for five minutes. I do see great signs with him, his work-rate is phenomenal on that left-hand side. The job Eddie is doing with him, improving him...but it's only really one season.
"This is his first proper season. Now, we don't want a situation where we just run straight into the England first team as soon as you start to perform."
On rivalry with Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer, Keown continued: "Cole Palmer is maybe slightly different. Maybe he looks at him and thinks he's quite gifted, a different animal, his journey has been a little bit different.
"If you look at Anthony Gordon, there seemed to me a lack of discipline, a lack of direction, he left Everton and wasn't particularly happy with the way that happened. He's got his head down, he was only working on 60% capacity when he was playing for Everton."
