
Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old housewife was charged in the Sessions Court here with two counts of having substances containing mitragynine, locally known as Ketum.
Mazlinah Harun pleaded guilty to both charges before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain.
On the first count, Mazlinah was accused of having an estimated 45,000ml of mitragynine, a psychotropic substance listed under the First Schedule and Third Schedule(Psychotropic Substances) of the Poisons Act 1952, at 1pm on June 19, this year, behind a house at Kampung Ulu Seberang, Putatan.
On the second count, she allegedly having 9,000g of green leaves believed to contain the psychotropic substance mitragynine at the same place and time.
Each charge is framed under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, punishable under Section 30(5) of the same Act, carries a fine of up to RM100,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Akaash Singh applied for another mention date for facts and sentencing pending the chemist’s report.
The court fixed July 30 for further mention.
Mazlinah was released on bail of RM3,000 with one surety for each charge.
The court also ordered her to report to a police station once a month and to surrender her passport to the court pending disposal of the case.
Mazlinah was unrepresented.
