  • The extensive resort in Wonsan, Kangwon province, features housing, hotels, and facilities designed to accommodate nearly 20,000 guests. It also has facilities for sea swimming, sports and recreation.
  • Tourism serves as one of the few legal avenues for North Korea to generate foreign currency, given that most of its economic activities are restricted by UN sanctions.
  • The inauguration ceremony was attended by Russia’s ambassador in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un, his daughter Kim Ju Ae, and his wife Ri Sol Ju.
  • Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the project and announced intentions to develop more large-scale tourist areas, with the Kalma resort serving as the initial phase for cultural tourism.
