Key figure in trial of Lucy Letby publicly IDed after sudden death

  • Consultant paediatrician Dr Mark Deakin has been identified as the doctor accused of being Lucy Letby's "crush" after reporting restrictions were lifted following his death in July aged 53.
  • Reporting restrictions granting Dr Deakin lifelong anonymity were lifted by Lord Justice Singh following an application by Associated Newspapers.
  • Prosecutors argued Letby attacked infants to gain Dr Deakin's attention, while court evidence showed the pair exchanged more than 1,300 messages.
  • Dr Deakin, a married father of two, gave evidence at Letby’s trial and later told the public inquiry into her crimes that she had misled and manipulated him into sharing confidential details about her victims.
  • Dr Deakin was reportedly dismissed for gross misconduct shortly before he died, and his death has been referred to Cheshire Coroner's Court.
