Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) has urged the Education Ministry to increase the number of counselling officers and unit staff at each district education office (PPD) to strengthen support services for educators facing mental health issues and stress.
KGKS president Murkam Hussien (pic) said the proposal is crucial following a recent tragedy where a female teacher was found dead at a school in Hulu Selangor last Thursday.
He noted that currently each PPD has only one counselling officer who also acts as the sole staff member for the unit, making an increase necessary due to Sabah's vast geographical area.
Offering condolences to the family of the deceased, Murkam called on all parties to remain calm and expressed confidence that the ministry and the police would handle the matter appropriately.
He expressed hope that adding more officers would improve crisis intervention efficiency in schools and reduce the workload of counselling teachers at the grassroots level.
