In a resounding victory, Khairy Jamaluddin, the former health minister, has resolved his defamation lawsuit against Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam, pertaining to contentious social media posts concerning Covid-19 vaccination efforts. The High Court witnessed the culmination of this legal battle as a consent judgment was recorded before Justice Johan Lee today, marking the end of a potentially protracted trial.

Gratitude was expressed by Justice Johan Lee towards the parties involved for amicably settling the dispute, thereby averting the need for a trial that was initially scheduled to span three days. Representing Khairy, Lawyer Abdul Rashid Ismail outlined the terms of the settlement, disclosing Lokman's commitment to remove seven contentious postings from his Facebook and YouTube accounts. Additionally, Lokman agreed to issue a public apology in both English and Bahasa Malaysia on his Facebook platform within 30 days, along with undisclosed compensation to Khairy.

Khairy, a pivotal figure in the Covid-19 immunization task force during his tenure as health minister, embarked on legal recourse in February 2022. His lawsuit targeted not only Lokman but also preacher Rasyiq Alwi Rasyiq, popularly known as Ustaz Abu Syafiq, over a series of social media posts spanning from October 20, 2021, to January 10, 2022.

Allegations of defamation stemmed from posts insinuating Khairy's negligence and irresponsibility in procuring Covid-19 vaccines, as well as casting doubts on his vaccination status. Khairy vehemently argued that such baseless accusations undermined public trust and jeopardized government efforts to combat the pandemic.

The gravity of the situation lay in the severe damage inflicted upon Khairy's reputation and credibility. These malicious statements not only sullied his professional standing but also subjected him to public scorn and ridicule. The detrimental impact extended beyond personal grievances, tarnishing the collective efforts of the health ministry and the government in battling Covid-19.

In his pursuit of justice, Khairy sought both financial damages and the removal of defamatory content. Moreover, he demanded retractions and public apologies to rectify the harm caused by the dissemination of false information.

Lawyer Abdul Rashid Ismail affirmed Khairy's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Malaysian public amidst the pandemic. He emphasized the detrimental effects of defamation on public perception and highlighted the imperative to counteract misinformation disseminated through social media channels.

With Lokman's case now resolved, attention turns to the impending court proceedings concerning Rasyiq Alwi Rasyiq. Khairy's decisive actions underscore a staunch defense against slanderous attacks aimed at undermining crucial public health initiatives.
