Kota Kinabalu: Former first non-Umno Selangor Menteri Besar (MB) Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who passed away on July 31, last visited Kota Kinabalu on April 29, 2013 (pic).

He helped PKR’s Christina Liew then in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition’s (which eventually became Pakatan Harapan after PAS quit the coalition) political fundraising campaign with a fiery speech at the Putra Theatre Ballroom.

Khalid was the first Pakatan Rakyat MB to lead Selangor following PR’s victory in the 2008 general election.

Encouraging Sabah to emulate his steps if PR won power, Khalid spoke on Selangor’s people-centric programmes, which granted to each Selangor household initial 20 cubic metres of water each year free of charge besides other welfare programmes.

Under his administration, the Selangor State Assembly passed the country’s first freedom of information legislation.

He was appointed for a second term as MB after the 2013 polls but was ousted slightly over a year later following the infamous Kajang Move by his own party to be replaced by Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali who brought down PKR in the Sheraton Move. Khalid was sacked from PKR after repeatedly refusing to vacate the MB post.

Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has decreed that Khalid be laid to rest at the Shah Alam Royal Mausoleum.
