Experts in khat, a form of Malay-Arabic calligraphy, have weighed in on the controversy surrounding the logo on the soles of shoes, which some have interpreted as resembling the Arabic script for the word "Allah"
According to Nor Azlin Hamidon, a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) specializing in Islamic art and calligraphy, the logo does not match the holy word "Allah" in terms of khat artistry. Azlin explained that the logo contains "excess lines" that deviate from traditional calligraphy methods and damage the integrity of the word "Allah."
Rahman Hamzah, president of the National Islamic Calligraphy Art Association (PSKK), echoed Azlin's sentiments, stating that the design on the shoe soles is unrelated to the word "Allah." He emphasized that the shape of the logo is too vague and can be interpreted in various ways, similar to how the shape of a cross or the letter "T" can hold different meanings.
Abdul Hanis Embong, an Islamic studies lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), urged Muslims not to focus solely on the loop in the logo, which resembles the strap of a shoe, and equate it with the word "Allah." He emphasized that when viewed as a whole, the logo does not fully resemble the word "Allah" and cautioned against drawing hasty conclusions based on partial observations.
In response to the controversy, shoe company Vern’s Holding Sdn Bhd issued an apology for the design of the logo, clarifying that it was inspired by the image of interconnected lines resembling a high-heeled shoe. The company emphasized that the design could be misinterpreted but reiterated that it had no intention of disrespecting any religion or belief.
Founder Ng Chuan Hoo met with officers from the Islamic development department (Jakim) to provide further clarification on the matter, indicating the company's commitment to addressing concerns raised by the public.
Despite the company's explanation, the controversy has escalated, with multiple police reports lodged against Vern’s Holding Sdn Bhd. The case is now under investigation for potentially violating laws related to intentionally wounding religious feelings and causing offense through the misuse of network facilities.
The ongoing investigation underscores the sensitivity of religious issues in Malaysia and the importance of respecting diverse beliefs. As the authorities delve deeper into the matter, it is essential for all parties involved to approach the issue with sensitivity and understanding, aiming for a resolution that upholds religious harmony and mutual respect in society.
