Khemkaran MLA Sarwan Singh Dhunn reached the ‘Pakka Morcha’ organised by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha on Friday, where he interacted with farmer leaders and received a memorandum from the farmer organisations.
He assured the organisations that he would discuss the issue of restarting the Sheron Cooperative Sugar Mill with the chief minister and work towards finding a solution. On the occasion, MLA Sarwan Singh Dhunn said that he had previously raised the matter in the Vidhan Sabha and would once again take it up with the CM.
The gathering was also addressed by leaders of organisations affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, including Daljit Singh Dayalpura, Sukhdev Singh Tur, Harjinder Singh Tanda, Nachhattar Singh Pannu, Tarsem Singh Luhar, Balkar Singh Valtoha, and Bhupinder Singh Pandori.
The speakers stated that the government would not need to spend even a single penny to restart the cooperative sugar mill, as the National Highways Authority (NHAI) has already deposited Rs 9 crore in the mill’s account as compensation for the land acquired for the construction of a national highway. As a result, the mill would not have to bear any additional expenses.
The protest launched by the organisations affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha has been ongoing for the past 23 days. The organisations are demanding that the mill be reopened and that its land should not be transferred to other departments.
The leaders also expressed strong opposition to the privatisation policies being pursued by both the Central and state governments.
