The death toll from the latest wave of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev has risen to 21, Ukraine's civil defence authority said early on Friday.

Rescue workers were still searching for 17 people missing in the rubble of a destroyed residential block, Ukrainian media reported. Dozens of injured people were being treated.

Authorities in Kiev had put the death toll at 16 on Thursday evening.

Russia attacked the city and other parts of Ukraine overnight with hundreds of drones, missiles and cruise missiles - an exceptionally heavy assault even after more than four years of war.

According to Ukrainian authorities, dozens of residential buildings were damaged across the country. The region around Kiev and the regions of Kharkiv and Odessa were also badly hit.

On Wednesday, Russia had already carried out one of the heaviest and longest attacks on Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022, using more than 800 drones.
