KINABATANGAN: Voter turnout for the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election reached 43.23% by 1 pm today.

The Election Commission reported that 20,873 of the constituency’s 48,282 registered voters had cast their ballots.

Of the three state seats within Kinabatangan, Lamag recorded the highest turnout at 44.50%.

Sukau followed with 44.32%, while Kuamut saw 41.45% of voters turn out.

A total of 36 polling centres with 117 streams opened simultaneously at 7.30 am for the dual by-elections.

The centres will close in stages from 1 pm to 5.30 pm according to set voting times.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary contest is a three-cornered fight.

Candidates are Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar from Barisan Nasional, Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman from Warisan, and independent Goldam Hamid.

The Lamag state seat by-election is a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Ismail Ayob and Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek.

The by-elections were triggered by the death of incumbent MP and Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on December 5 last year.
