King Charles III has released a statement celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The monarch praised the two nations' "centuries of shared challenge and achievement" in the message shared on social media.

The King embarked on a historic State Visit to the US earlier this year, where he met up with his friend and President Donald Trump, playing a crucial role in reigniting the fractured relations.

In his message, the sovereign said: "Through centuries of shared challenge and achievement, our nations have built a relationship founded on friendship, trust and a belief in liberty, the rule of law and the dignity of all people.

"As we look ahead to the next 250 years, I have no doubt we will continue to defend our shared values.

"The connection between our peoples is one that I trust will only grow stronger with time."

Today marks the start of nationwide celebrations across the US.

In Washington DC, over one million people are expected to gather on the National Mall for a "full day of programming", according to the White House.

This includes words from President Trump and "Salute to America" fireworks - described by the White House as "largest pyrotechnics display in the history of the world".

In New York, ships from around the globe are anticipated to gather in the harbour for Sail4th 250.

And across the country, July 4 celebrations are being hosted in royal jubilee-style street parties, as they mark the special occasion.

King Charles's transatlantic trip in April came at a critical moment of international relations - and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Addressing Congress, he acknowledged the "spirit of 1776" and hailed the "special relationship" between the two nations.

"He made a great speech. I was very jealous," the US President said after.

The monarch was also able to receive standing ovations from both Democrats and Republicans, which, the President admitted, is "something I could never do."

King Charles also addressed the President's recent comments to the media.

"You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the US, European countries would be speaking German," the sovereign recalled.

"Dare I say that if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French!"

Cue another encore of bellowing laughter across the room, including from the President, who was, sort of, the brunt of the joke.

Undoubtedly, since he assumed the throne, King Charles has prioritised revitalising the so-called special relationship with the US, particularly as Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the President continue to butt heads in the press.
