HIS MAJESTY Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has called on the government to ensure that all military procurements are made based on thorough assessments, actual user requirements, and market value – not merely on the proposals of agents.
Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Parade of the Gerak Khas Regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing today (16 August), His Majesty, who also serves as Colonel Commandant of the elite unit, issued a stern reminder to avoid wasteful spending on irrelevant or overpriced defence equipment.
“Do not waste time buying items that are absurd and unsuitable for the military’s needs. If you don’t know the price, ask me first,” said His Majesty.
Reflecting on a previous warning made five years ago, Sultan Ibrahim highlighted the example of the Rigid Riding Craft (RRC) purchased for RM5 million, when better alternatives were available for under RM2 million.
“Recently, I heard there was a proposal to purchase a similar boat, just slightly larger, at nearly RM10 million. This makes no sense and must be scrutinised thoroughly,” he said.
Beyond price, Sultan Ibrahim stressed the importance of prioritising the quality and functionality of assets acquired.
“What has happened to the combat diving pool at this camp, which was supposed to be completed in 2022? It is still not operational,” he added, expressing dissatisfaction over delays and inefficiencies in defence infrastructure projects.
His Majesty’s remarks reaffirm a commitment to enhancing the operational readiness of the Gerak Khas Regiment, while urging transparency, accountability, and sound judgement in defence spending. - August 16, 2025
